Patty Govender BSHT, MPhil

Patty has over 20 years’ experience working in a range of hospital, school and community settings including acute wards, rehabilitation centres and private practice.  Her strong experience and clinical background have augured well for Patty’s engagement in university teaching, clinical education and professional inquiry. While on placement, she supports her students to integrate research evidence, theoretical knowledge, their learning and experience together with the preferences of the client/ their family to ensure well founded clinical decisions when planning and implementing communication and swallowing management.

Patty is currently a higher degree research student at the University of Queensland under the supervision of Dr Brooke Ryan, Dr Emma Finch and Professor Miranda Rose. Her current research and clinical interests lie in the nature and treatment of aphasia and related neurogenic communication disorders, with a special focus on exploring psychosocial wellbeing and interventions for those affected by mild aphasia and mild stroke.

Patty Govender earned a Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Therapy from the University of Kwa Zulu Natal (South Africa), and Masters in Linguistics (Cum Laude) from the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa). Patty has worked as a generalist Speech language therapist and an audiologist for many years. Her area of special interest is assessment and intervention for adult neurogenic communication disorders. Patty has been a part of the Massey University Speech Language Therapy Program, as a clinical educator for more than 10 years.
