A cross-cultural investigation of the Functional Theory of Human Values: Examining its structure and prediction of external outcomes

Mr Vilar Lobo de Souza examined the Functional Theory of Human Values, taking a multi-national approach to data from 20 countries. Researchers have claimed this theory to be parsimonious and while there have been attempts to explain data from more complex models reported in the literature, most of this research has been limited to the Brazilian context. Using the Functional Theory in four systematic cross-sectional investigations, Mr Vilar Lobo de Souza analysed the structure of human values, age and gender differences in value priorities, and values prediction of external outcomes related to political participation and pro-environmental beliefs. Using multi-level analysis, the study showed that existence (a type of materialistic value) and suprapersonal values are the main predictors of carbon emission concerns and identified meaningful cross-level interactions. Overall, Mr Vilar Lobo de Souza contributed to the field of human values research by presenting cross-cultural evidence of structure and prediction of a parsimonious model of values.
