Thesis Title
Dynamic Programming based coordinated ramp metering algorithms

Ramp metering (a way of regulating the volume of traffic accessing motorways) is the most cost-effective way of preventing recurrent congestion. Mr Yu developed an online approach for the optimal coordination and control of ramp metering. He evaluated its performances in both macroscopic and microscopic traffic simulation environments. The simulation results indicate that his proposed algorithms can eliminate motorway queues under high traffic demands and manage queue lengths at metered on-ramps when queue constraints are not too strict.
