Thesis Title
Model based design of barrier coatings for paper based materials

Read article at Massey Research Online: MRO icon

Paper based materials have limited barrier properties. Several techniques have been developed to overcome this limitation. One of these is the application of clay filled dispersion coatings. Mr Martinez-Hermosilla focused his research on the characterisation of the components of dispersion coatings and their effect on the barrier properties of coated paper materials. This information was the basis for the development of a mathematical model to predict the permeability of dispersion coatings. The model differentiated how the quantity and characteristics of the components affect the barrier properties of dispersion coatings. With the mathematical model it is now possible to guide the optimum formulation of dispersion coatings for required barrier performance.
