The underlying cause in the development of cancer is the accumulation of mutations in DNA. Each cell in the human body contains a number of DNA repair systems that are essential for reducing the possibility of mutation. These repair systems are also often targets for numerous cancer therapies, thus it is important to deduce and understand these pathways in order to create more effective treatments. Ms Smith identified a novel interaction between two major players involved in one of these repair pathways and provided a platform to further investigate the function of this interaction.
