Mr Utto used mathematical modelling methodologies to understand the key design variables in controlled release active packaging systems for horticultural products. The research showed that these systems can maintain headspace concentrations of natural antifungal agents such as hexanal vapour, suppressing grey mould infections and achieving significant increases in product shelf life. The release behaviours of the system were well predicted by the mathematical model. The research provides tools for optimising active packaging systems and improving export supply chains for New Zealand horticultural products.
