Associate Professor France Grenaudier-Klijn BA, BA(Hons), PhD

Associate Professor

School of Humanities Media and Creative Comm

Bonjour,

Born in France, I have lived in New Zealand since 1988. I have been an academic staff member at Massey University since April 2002, and programme coordinator for French since 2008. I am driven by my interest in and commitment to the French language, culture and history,  and by my desire to share and promote those wherever possible: in my teaching, research, academic role, and community. Belonging to two cultures is an immensely rewarding journey. My job ensures that it never reaches its destination.

Project Title: Encounters with the feminine - memory, Identity and Solitude in Patrick Modiano's work

In its simplest form, this book-length project, based on a corpus of 27 novels, seeks to answer three fundamental questions in relation to the place of female characters in French novelist Patrick Modiano's fiction: WHO are these figures? WHAT narrative function/s do they serve? HOW do they relate to the thematic, aesthetics and ethical components of his writing? The monograph aims to: 1)sketch out the narrative identity of Modiano's female figures by focusing on their conception, modes of representation and narrative functions: what do characters look like? What are their occupations and relationships to the world and others? How do they manifest themselves in the novels? etc. 2)link these findings to Modiano's idiosyncratic style by demonstrating that some recurrent motifs (the scar; the suitcase; the false name) illustrate his resistance to a simplistic representation of femininity and history, while also stressing that the deliberate indeterminacy of these fictional entities is perfectly consonant with the lacks and complexities commonly found in post-Holocaust/post-memory texts. Narrative identity must leave room for what Modiano himself calls the "secret that no one, [¿] not even the passage of time, can take away from you." My project hopes to show why and how Modiano achieves this aim.
