Associate Professor Kerry Harrington BAgSc(H), MAgSc(H), PhD

Associate Professor in Weed Science

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Agriculture and Environment

I am the weed science specialist at Massey University. As well as teaching aspects of weed biology, identification and control to undergraduate students, both in internal and distance learning papers, I also supervise a number of postgraduate students each year and undertake my own research. My main undergraduate paper is 283.311 Controlling Weeds, which is available both internally and for distance learning. I host a web-site on weed identification and control (https://www.massey.ac.nz/weeds). I also give advice on scholarships for agricultural and horticultural students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels as I chair the committee involved with adminstering these.  I am currently also the secretary of the Council of Australiasian Weed Societies. This links to my Google Scholar profile.

Associate Professor in Weed Science, involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in weed biology and control, and also actively involved in research and extension about weed control.

Current Projects

Project Title: Managing Herbicide Resistance

This project will endeavor to improve weed control and vegetation management within New Zealand to minimize future herbicide resistance. As part of a larger national programme, funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) and managed by AgResearch, our role will be to design identification tools to quickly identify plants that have developed resistance to herbicides. Some of these tools will involve seed-based assays but most will make use of gene-based methods. The genes responsible for resistance will be identified using a range of different methods, then resistance markers will be used to develop rapid identification tests.
