Dr Alison Pirret is Assistant Editor for the Journal of Intensive and Critical Care Nursing and Chair of the Heath Quality & Commission Deteriorating Patient Programme Expert Advisory Group.
Dr Pirret's research interests focus on innovative initiatives to improve patient care and access. Dr Pirret was lead investigator in the first internationally published research evaluating the effectiveness of nasal high flow oxygen in the adult ward patient (2017), the lead investigator in the first internationally published research comparing nurse practitioners' and doctors' diagnostic reasoning of a complex case (2016), and leader investigator in the first internationally published research on the effectiveness of ward experienced nurses in a ICU outreach team (2015).
Dr Pirret is author of Acute care nursing; a physiological approach to clinical assessment and patinet care; the 3rd edition is being released in 2018.
Dr Alison Pirret combines her researcher/teacher role with her nurse practitioner (prescribing) ICU outreach role at Middlemore Hospital, managing deteriorating adult ward patients.
Three studies are currently progress. Two are single-site studies: 1) a prospective observational study exploring the effectiveness of nasal high flow oxgyen in the adult ward patient and 2) a qualtiative study exploring patients' and families' perception of their ward deterioration, the need for a patient/family activated call of concern service, and barriers preventing its use. The third study is a national multi-centre study on the effectiveness of nasal high flow oxygen in deteriorating adult ward patients.
