Dr Damian Ruth
Senior Lecturer
School of ManagementDamian is a senior lecturer in strategy at Massey University, New Zealand, where he teaches undergraduate and post-graduate students and on the Executive MBA programme.
He entered academia after extended stints in journalism, editing and consulting. His early degrees from the University Cape of Town were in the arts, humanities and social sciences. His PhD (Sheffield, UK) was in education and management. He has been an academic development practitioner in the management sciences, and has lectured organizational psychology, research methods, human resources, and, since joining Massey in 2002, strategy. He has taught many subjects in a variety of contexts in several universities in different countries.
In recent years the focus has been on the role of universities and higher education, management education and development and particularly the use of art and design in developing strategic thinking, organization studies, and strategy. In the last ten years he has published over 30 refereed publications plus 37 other publications, received a teaching award, and research awards, grants and Fellowships. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia.
His current work centres on the use of the arts and design in personal development and strategic thinking and non-traditional arts-based inquiries into organizational culture. His main areas of service at Massey University are in curriculum review and developing communities of teaching practice. He is currently working towards a Graduate Diploma in Industrial Design at Massey. Damian has published poetry in little magazines for many years and is a dedicated tinkerer ('sheddie' in NZ).
