Prof Tim Bentley

My primary research interests centre on psychosociial risks and healthy work, with a particular emphasis on workplace bullying and other forms of ill-treatement in the workplace.  This work is undertaken with a cluster of Massey scholars and postgraduate researchers known as the Healthy Work Group,, which I established in 2009.  Massey's Healthy Work Group also collaborates with researchers working in this field from across New Zealand and the world.

I have held several formal research leadership roles throughpout my career, including director roles at Forst Research (Scion), Massey and AUT.  My strengths are in research leadership, establishing and directing research centres and clusters, developing the research environment, achieving funding and leading funded programmes and projects, mentorship, and external industry engagement.

Until December, 2015, I was employed as Director of the NZ Work Research Institute at AUT University, responsible for a programme of funded research involving six specialist research groups andaround 60 researchers. I am now employed in the School of Management at Massey University, will a responsibility to provide research leadership and mentoring within this group. 

I am experienced in successfully implementing and managing major funded research programmes (FRST, HRC, SRIF).  I have also held roles in which I have been responsible for advancing PBRF quality amongst faculty.

As founder and former head of AUT's strategic Future of Work Programme, I have a deep appreciation of the global forces and trends that are changing how we live and work, and the importance industry places on understanding and managing the challenges and opportunities that such changes bring. This expertise is an important touchstone for future research at Massey and a focus for building positive and productive relationships between Massey and business and communitystakeholders. 

My work has had a high level of research impact on public policy and organisational practice. Examples include contributions to government policy on tourist safety, workplace bullying intervention at government level (through Worksafe Guidelines for best practice), and my work with industry groups such as the EEO Trust and the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) on future of work preparedness.

I have made regular contributions to media and industry publications - my work on tourism, bullying and future of wok issues has attracted regular (approximately bi-weekly) coverage and comment in the national media (press, TV, radio, popular magazines, etc.). Examples include TV One news, TV3 News, Breakfast TV, Radio NZ, many independent radio stations, NZ Herald (regular contributor), Management, HR Today, Safeguard, Mindfood, Next, North and South. 




Tim Bentley is a professor of work and organisation in Massey University's School of Management, and founding member of Massey's Healthy Work Group..  His research focuses on three key fields: wellbeing and psychosocial risk (notably workplace bullying); occupational health and safety; and the future of work.  Tim leads government and industry-funded research undertaken by multidisciplinary teams from Massey and elsewhere.  Tim has led several HRC-funded projects and has authored approximately 120 publications, with nearly half published in international journals.  Tim is Senior Editor of the Cambridge University Press publication, Journal of Management & Organization (JMO).
