Associate Professor Emma Hudson-Doyle MGeophys, MRes, PhD

Associate Professor

Doctoral Supervisor
School of Psychology

Dr Emma Hudson-Doyle is based at the Joint Centre for Disaster Research at Massey University/GNS Science, Wellington, New Zealand. Her interests lie at the interface between physical science and critical decision makers, with a primary focus on the communication of science advice during natural hazard events. Current research focuses on the communication of forecast and model uncertainty. Other research areas and supervision topics include community resilience, social media in disasters, citizen science, aftershock forecasts, early warnings, motivations to prepare, communicating probabilities, low likelihood risk, and visual uncertainty, and exploring the use of science advice through table top emergency management exercises.

Emma is also part of the National Science Challenge Cultural Resilience Toolbox Team (2014-2019), exploring the use of citizen science to enhance tsunami preparedness, and the Natural Hazards Platform funded project 'Quicker and Safer Tsunami evacuations through agent-based modelling' (Lead: Dr William Power, 2017-2019). Previous specific projects have included exploring perceptions of aftershock advice and preparedness behaviours after the Cook Strait earthquakes of 2013, identifying the effective communication of model uncertainty (EQC and GNS Science cofunding 2014-2016), investigations into the communication of probability forecasts, uncertain science advice, and team based emergency management simulations for a hypothetical volcanic eruption (N.Z’s Foundation for Research, Science and Technology Postdoctoral Fellowship 2010-2014), and ' Capturing the secrets of a lahar' (Marsden Posdoctoral Fellow, 2008-2010) which investigated how seismic data can be utilised to identify characteristics of rain triggered lahars at Semeru, Indonesia. Emma was also a 2013 ISSC World Social Science Fellow, who were tasked with rethinking the framework of the  Risk Interpretation and Action working group of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) programme; lead the eSocSci Communication and Natural Hazards Group Aotearoa NZ from 2013-2017, and is co-cordinator of the IRDR International Centre of Excellence: Community Resilience Wellington, a joint venture between Massey University and Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office.
