Campbell Birch grew up in Browns Bay and attended Rangitoto College. With the support of the William Georgetti Scholarship and the Anne Reid Memorial Trust Scholarship he completed graduate studies in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University, working under Marianne Hirsch. On return to Aotearoa New Zealand he joined Massey’s School of English and Media Studies.
