Sally is passionate about access to the curriculum and to literacy learning for children with complex communication needs who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Sally teaches the Year 3 paper on AAC and coordinates the Postgraduate Programmes in Speech and Language Therapy. Sally delivers workshops nationally and internationally with a focus on empowering communication partners to create optimal language and learning environments. Sally is one of the Co-Chairs of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC) Conference which will be held on the Gold Coast in July 2018, and is an Associate Editor for the AAC journal.
Sally's research interests are focused around access to the curriculum and to literacy learning for children with complex communication needs who use augmentative and alternative communication. Sally is currently involved in a number of projects including a meta-analysis with Professor Karen Erickson (University of North Carolina at Chapel HIll) examining the effects of picture-symbols on learning to read, and a series of case studies with Dr Elizabeth Doell exploring the impact of a partnership approach for creating optimal language and learning environments for children with communication disorders. Sally has a strong passion for postgraduate student education and coordinates the Postgraduate Programmes in Speech and Language Therapy.
