Bryan is a poet, fiction writer, essayist and literary scholar. He is the author of four collections of poetry, Etymology, A History of Glass, Native Bird and Brass Band to Follow; a novel, Entanglement, a finalist for the Ockham NZ Book Award; a novella, Late Sonata; a collection of short stories, Ephraim's Eyes; and two scholarly books on literature: Resistance to Science in Contemporary American Poetry and Poetry and Mindfulness: Interruption to a Journey. He has been recognized by writing awards in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US. A Senior Fellow in the Higher Education Academy (UK), he has received a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and a national Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award. He teaches 139.123 Creative Writing, 139.229 Writing Poetry, 139.280 Creative Nonfiction and 139.765 New Directions in Creative Writing. His supervision interests include poetry writing, fiction writing and contemporary poetry and poetics.
