Roberto completed his PhD in Soil Science in 2008, at Santiago de Compostela University (Galicia, NW Spain), working as Post-doctoral Researcher up to June 2010, at the Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry Dept. Roberto currently works on a permanent basis with the Soil Science Stream of the New Zealand Biochar Research Centre, Institute of Agriculture and Environment, Massey University.
Roberto has research experience on soil and environmental science, including work on monitoring and cleaning soil contamination derived from uncontrolled anthropic pesticide emissions, as well as application of phytoremediation techniques, and organic carbon stabilisation in Technosoils (man-made soils). Current research is focused on biochar and biochar-soil interactions, with special attention to carbon and nitrogen cycles. Biochar is a carbon-rich organic material generated by heating biomass under a limited supply of oxygen that is intended to be used as a safe soil amendment. This will help to promote the carbon sink capacity of temperate soils in a climate change and greenhouse emissions reduction scenario. The research intends to develop robust and low-cost methodologies to determine and account for the stable fraction of carbon in biochar. In addition, the inclusion of biochar and deeper rooting plant species in developed grazed pasture systems can increase permanent carbon sinks in temperate soils as those of New Zealand.
