Project Title: The Invisible Indian: The Anglo-Indian Diaspora in New Zealand

Anglo-Indians, an Indian minority community, have been migrating to New Zealand since at least the early 20th century, yet they continue to be largely overlooked in accounts of 'Indians' in New Zealand. Their cultural practices, which are arguably more western than Indian (e.g. English is their first language, and they are Christians) which may assist them in integrating, may also account for their relative invisibility. They are still migrating from India to New Zealand and many more would like to do so. What will be explored in this project are the migration and settling stories of Anglo-Indians in New Zealand in order to build up a picture of this community in New Zealand, and to understand the relationship between their migration and New Zealand's migration policies. An additional aspect of the project is an investigation into why Anglo-Indians in India still set their sights on a life in New Zealand. Research will be mix-method, with archival, interview and narrative approaches employed. Institutional support will be drawn from Massey University, and the University of Calcutta, Kolkata.

Completed Projects

Project Title: Ethnographic Profiling of Small Town Anglo-Indians in India

The overall project comprises a set of ethnographic and/or narrative research based projects being carried out with Anglo-Indian communities in the small towns (railway towns, hill stations, and others e.g. those of Pondicherry, Goa and Kerala) of India by a group of researchers from the social sciences and humanities, at different stages in their careers, from New Zealand and India. Very little is known of the non-metro Anglo-Indian communities except for anecdotal information which indicates that their experience is quite different from the large city populations, which have been the focus of recent research.
