Oliver Blair is studying full time to gain his Bachelor of Design, majoring in the diverse practise of Spatial Design at the College of Creative Arts in Wellington, aiming to graduate in 2012.
Through his study Oliver has learned to design complex urban systems, realtime navigation concepts, buildings, exhibitions, digital environments, websites, furniture, games and sculptures. Oliver has also had the opportunity to work on several live projects including the Popup gardens in the civic center and Kilbirnie, the living_lab exhibition and website design/build and the Space Trace installation for LUX 2011.
Alongside Oliver's academic work, he has been working at the Wellington City Council for the urban design department helping to visualize and develop design proposals. He got the job through the sustainable design block course in 2011, where the final presentation critics were urban designers from the Council.
Oliver strongly recommends studying design at Massey in Wellington where the facilities and resources are up to date and relevant and the lecturers are passionate, knowledgable and show interest in students individuality. Oliver found that spending multiple years not studying between high school and university greatly aided in his higher education.
Oliver's advice to new tertiary students: you don't have to do anything, so act with intent, and always do your best.
