    English for Academic Purposes short courses with Massey University

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses

English for Academic Purposes will provide you with an IELTS-free pathway if you meet the academic, but not English language requirements for entry into programmes at Massey University. 

EAP is a non-credit bearing ‘training scheme’ and has received academic approval for delivery from 2021.

NOTE: The EAP courses have replaced Massey University’s delivery of the following programmes effective Semester One 2021: 

  • Foundation Certificate in Academic English (DEEP)
  • Foundation Certificate in Advanced Academic English (DEEP Advanced)

EAP is designed for you to develop your language skills for use in an English-speaking tertiary academic environment. The task–based syllabus aims to prepare you in all aspects of academic studies. Through graded tasks and classwork, you will develop the necessary language, conceptual and study skills to fulfil such academic tasks as:

  • note-taking
  • summarising
  • paragraphing
  • essay and report writing
  • referencing 
  • giving oral presentations. 

EAP also provides careful attention to macro-skills development and practice.

Entry requirements

  • Students with an IELTS of 5.0 or equivalent will gain admission into EAP1*
  • Students with an IELTS of 5.5 or equivalent will gain admission into EAP2

*Students who are eligible for EAP1 must complete both EAP1 and EAP2 and meet the required grade to meet English entry to their chosen programme at Massey Massey

EAP provides you with flexibility of two entry and exit points depending on your individual goals and pathways:

Foundation Studies – entry requirement equivalent to IELTS 5.5 overall

Minimum equivalent to IELTS 5.5 overall

Direct entry into University - entry requirement equivalent to IELTS 6.0 to 7.0 overall

A sufficient score in the adaptive test KITE (Kaplan International Tools for English) may also be used to fulfil the English entry requirement to EAP. See takekite.com/for-educators for more information.
