    Dr Khalid Arif

Senior Lecturer in Mechatronics and Robotics - School of Food and Advanced Technology

    Email:

My major research interests include smart sensors, intelligent systems and additive manufacturing (3D Printing). I hold a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana and an MEng in Engineering Synthesis from the University of Tokyo (東京大学). During my PhD, at the Birck Nanotechnology Center Purdue University, I worked on portable biosensors and study of light scattering from nanoparticles for biosensing applications. At the University of Tokyo my work was related to polymer resin based 3D printing.  Please visit Sensors and Smart Systems Lab website for more details about my work.

Mathew's research relates to development of acoustics/ultrasonics tools and techniques. Prior to his current position at Massey, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Auckland where he worked on MBIE projects relating to the development of acoustics/ultrasonics instruments and techniques for measuring pasture biomass and the structural properties of trees. Before this he was a research fellow at Brunel Innovation Centre in Cambridge, UK where he performed research on the use of ultrasonic guided waves for nondestructive testing on several European Union projects. His PhD work related to the 3D acoustic imaging using microphone arrays (acoustic cameras).

I qualified as a toolmaker and later graduated with a BSc in Electronics and Computer Science. Major projects which I've contributed to include an asparagus sorting line for Tendertips Ltd which processes several hundred tons of asparagus each year. More recently I've been part of a group developing the Classifynder which is an automatic pollen scanning microscope. The Classifynder won the Supreme Award for Engineering Excellence at the 2013 NZ Engineering Excellence Awards.
