School of Fundamental Sciences staff – statistics and bioinformatics

The School of Fundamental Sciences is home to some of Australasia’s leading researchers in statistics and quantitative genetics. Our research activities are broad, and include theoretical and computational statistics; statistical methods in epidemiology, geophysics and engineering; and bioinformatics and computational biology.

Professor in Geostatistics - School of Agriculture and Environment

I'm Professor in Geostatistics, in the Statistics Group and in Volcanic Risk Solutions at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. My research is focussed on estimation of hazard from volcanoes and earthquakes, with interests in related problems from survival analysis and process control.

I moonlight as an Associate Editor for the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Statistics and for Statistics in Volcanology (https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/siv/), and am a member of the New Zealand Volcano Science Advisory Panel

  • Associate Professor Patrick Biggs

Associate Professor in Genomics and Computational Biology - School of Fundamental Sciences

Associate Professor in Computational Biology - School of Veterinary Science

    Prof Murray Cox

Professor in Computational Biology - School of Fundamental Sciences

My research addresses fundamental questions in contemporary genomics: the study of an organism's entire complement of DNA. The ability to integrate new genetic technologies with sophisticated computational analysis remains a key bottleneck in advancing the biological sciences. My research group leverages national and international connections to address outstanding biological questions at the interface of genomics, computer science and statistics.

  • Dr Jonathan Godfrey

    Dr Jonathan Godfrey

Senior Lecturer - School of Fundamental Sciences

Jonathan's research is focused on the needs of the thousands of blind people around the world who need additional tools to make the visual elements of statistical thinking and practice less of a barrier. He also engages with staff and postgraduate students on campus who need statistical advice, which then involves linking the client with a postgraduate student from Statistics.

  • Prof Geoff Jones

    Prof Geoff Jones

Professor in Biostatistics - School of Fundamental Sciences

My main research interests are in the general area of Biostatistics, especially the use of Bayesian methods in Epidemiology. I have also published in other areas of statistics including calibration, survival analysis, experimental design and small-area estimation. I have worked on several consulting projects with local industries and government agencies, including poverty estimation projects overseas with UN World Food Programme and the World Bank in Asia. I collaborate widely with scientists in a range of disciplines, but particularly with the Veterinary Epidemiologists at Massey’s Epicentre. I am currently a member of the OiE  Collaborating Centre for Diagnostic Test Validation Science

    Dr Katharina Parry

Lecturer in Statistics - School of Fundamental Sciences

I am a statistician with a background predominately in the field of transportation science, as well as the field of applied multivariate statistics.

Originally, I studied Statistik at Dortmund Universität (Germany) before doing my Masters in Statistics at the University of Auckland (2009), and then my PhD in Statistics at Massey Univeristy (2013). After completing my doctoral work, I joined Auckland University of Technology from 2012 to 2016 as a lecturer in the Mathematical and Computation Sciences. I then returned to Massey University as a lecturer in Statistics in 2016.

  • Dr Matthieu Vignes

    Dr Matthieu Vignes

Senior Lecturer in Statistical Genetics - School of Fundamental Sciences

Matthieu studied Applied Maths/Stats at the ENS Lyon (France) before doing his PhD in Grenoble (2007, INRIA Rhone-Alpes, France). He then joined BioSS in Dundee and Aberdeen (Scotland) from 2006 to 2009 as a Statistician. He then became a Research Fellow in the Maths and Comput. Sc. dpt of the INRA in Toulouse (France) in 2009 (present: detached position).

Matthieu is now a Senior Lecturer in Statistical Genetics at Massey University (New Zealand).

Matthieu's work focuses on deciphering relationships between entities in a complex (e.g. biological) system; please have a look at his research interests.
