The Wildbase Oil Response team were up in the Bay of Plenty in November 2014 revisiting penguins affected by the Rena oil spill. We're interested in knowing about the diving behaviour of the Rena Little Blue penguins compared to Little Blue penguins that were not affected by oil. We've been out putting time-depth-recorder tags on 8 individuals from each group of birds. We've already obtained some data - here is a peek at one of the penguin's diving patterns. This little bird headed out to sea 4.57am, got home at 10.16pm and performed dives up to 18m. They work hard to get their food!
