This project is a longitudinal research study, spanning three years, of early literacy development among young children during their first three years in school. The project involves professional learning and development workshops for teachers focussing on contemporary research-based approaches to teaching literacy. A randomised intervention and control design is being used to determine the effects of specific teacher strategies designed to enhance the literacy learning outcomes of all children in the intervention group, but particularly those children in low decile schools and/or from Maori and Pasifika backgrounds.
