Disaster Risk and Emergency Management: National Expedition

Two-weeks tour around New Zealand

24 JUNE - 6 JULY, 2019

You’ll explore New Zealand’s varied hazardscape, debate the pros and cons of the world’s responses to significant hazards and emergencies, and work with local experts and community groups to understand the context, consequences, and management of risks. You will gain an understanding of the intricate relationships between risks, risk reduction/ mitigation, resilience, readiness, response, and recovery. Your study tour begins in Christchurch and travels through the spectacular scenery of both the North and South Islands. Your case studies will involve explorations of the scenic Bay of Islands and Northland to see the relatively unique approach being taken there to community-based emergency management, the thriving cosmopolitan city of Auckland and its complex risk, economic, and social environment, the varied riskscape of the Tongariro geothermal zone, and the disaster risk, resilience, and recovery of Christchurch and the Canterbury region after the destructive 2010 and 2011 earthquakes.
