In October-November 2019, JCDR Director Professor David Johnston was awarded a Distinguished Fellowship through the New Zealand Centre at Peking University to work with Professor Qinghong Zhang, Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. The New Zealand Centre is located on the Beijing Yanyuan Campus and is the product of a partnership involving Peking University and all of New Zealand’s universities. It promotes the study of New Zealand in China and contributes to the strengthening of the relationship between China and New Zealand.
David's visit aimed to strengthen and further develop the research partnership between Massey University’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research and Peking University’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. Both universities are active members of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) research programme on High Impact Weather which aims to promote cooperative international research to achieve a dramatic increase in resilience to high impact weather. David was accompanied by PhD student Lisa McLaren, whose research on Citizen Science is also aligned with the WMO project.
