The Internet of Things and Cloud Computing

This course involves participants in solving problems whose solutions require active, sensing and connected “things” augmented with Cloud Computing capabilities. Students will design and implement things that participate in the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud Computing environments.

Course code

Qualifications are made up of courses. Some universities call these papers. Each course is numbered using six digits.

158335

Level

The fourth number of the course code shows the level of the course. For example, in course 219206, the fourth number is a 2, so it is a 200-level course (usually studied in the second year of full-time study).

300-level

Credits

Each course is worth a number of credits. You combine courses (credits) to meet the total number of credits needed for your qualification.

You need to complete the above course or courses before moving onto this one.

General progression requirements

You must complete at least 45 credits from 200-level before enrolling in 300-level courses.

Learning outcomes

What you will learn. Knowledge, skills and attitudes you’ll be able to show as a result of successfully finishing this course.

  • 1 Discuss and apply the main concepts and methods of: (i) Cloud Computing, (ii) the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Web of Things (WoT), and (iii) the Cloud IoT paradigm.
  • 2 Design a Cloud IoT Computing environment suitable for selected types of application scenarios using appropriate methodologies and Cloud IoT platforms.
  • 3 Solve a real-world problem, within a team, by developing a Cloud IoT application and environment that includes: (i) controlling active things (actuators) and getting data from sensing things (sensors), and (ii) deploying appropriate Cloud services, within the Cloud IoT/WoT environment.
  • 4 Analyse the issues of security, privacy and trust for Cloud Computing and IoT/WoT Infrastructures.

Learning outcomes can change before the start of the semester you are studying the course in.

Assessments

Assessment Learning outcomes assessed Weighting
Computer programmes 2 4 20%
Computer programmes 1 2 3 4 30%
