Forensic Psychology

The focus of this course is to study the issues and controversies in contemporary relationships between psychology and law. The diversity of the field of forensic practice is reflected in the topics covered, and the themes of violence and justice are used to represent the multidisciplinary influences at the nexus of psychology and law within mental health and legal systems.

  • 1 Demonstrate critical awareness of a variety of perspectives and methodologies used in the field of forensic research in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • 2 Critically examine violence and justice and the issues and controversies (including culture and gender) in research on violence, crime and social justice.
  • 3 Examine how representations of the dangerous other that permeate our modern media repetitively produce and re-produce 'risk' that must be managed and contained.
  • 4 Use critical theory to interrogate how the discipline of psychology is an active participant in developing and maintaining structural and cultural practices that inscribe meaning on the body of the 'other'.
