Marine Ecology

Students will develop an in-depth understanding of the life histories of marine organisms and the mechanisms that determine the distribution and abundance of biodiversity in our oceans. Topics include: marine organism life histories, connectivity and dispersal, community ecology, trophic ecology, and anthropogenic impacts including climate change.

  • 2 Contextualise how life history variation influences the demographics of populations, with impacts over ecological and evolutionary timescales.
  • 3 Describe the major biotic and abiotic factors governing the distribution of marine biodiversity and assembly of marine communities.
  • 4 Discuss how anthropogenic impacts alter the strength of biotic and abiotic effects, and ultimately how anthropogenic impacts drive changes in marine biodiversity.
  • 5 Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills to test hypotheses about the forces governing the distribution of marine biodiversity.
