Equine Clinical Studies

An overview of common equine diseases and preventative health programmes. This course covers aspects of equine medicine, surgery, lameness, reproduction and pharmacotherapeutics, with an emphasis on a diagnostic and therapeutic approach to the sick or abnormal horse.

Course notes

This course is only available to BVSc Year 4 students. Students will be required to be at Massey University until the end of each semester. The examination dates posted on the University website do not include practical or other SoVS-organised examinations, most of which take place after the formal written examinations. Travel plans should therefore be made on the basis of being at Massey until the semester end date unless and until the Undergraduate Programme Office advises that an earlier departure date will be permitted.

All assessments are compulsory. Students must achieve at least 40% in each of the online module tests and at least 50% in the final exam. Students must pass the Practical Skills Examination and are allowed up to 3 attempts at this. Attendance at all practical, laboratory and all clinical classes is compulsory. Non-attendance without exemption having been granted constitutes failure in the course, regardless of marks obtained in assessment procedures.

  • 1 Safely perform a complete clinical examination, identify abnormalities and interpret the relevance of these findings.
  • 2 Construct an accurate problem list from clinical information, including history, physical examination findings and laboratory results.

  • 4 Interpret results from diagnostic tests.
  • 5 Propose rational treatment and management options for common equine diseases.
  • 6 Discuss cases and problems that should be referred for further investigation and management.
