Theories and Models of Health Promotion

An opportunity for students to explore the theoretical foundation of community and population-based health promotion and mental health promotion. The course emphasises the application of models and theories to public health programmes and policies.

  • 1 Discuss the context and underlying values of health promotion practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • 2 Identify the key theories and models used to guide health promotion work at the individual (micro), community (meso) and structural (macro) level, including Māori and Pacific models of health.
  • 3 Critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of key health promotion theories and models when applied to practice.
  • 4 Examine how different theories and models can be used to effect change in health promotion programs, policy and planning.
