Earth Science Fieldwork

This course provides a hands-on experience of geoscientific fieldwork, from data collection through to analysis and interpretation of these data to explain geological and geomorphological processes. Analyses and interpretations will be applied to land, resource, and hazard management issues in New Zealand.

  • 1 Work effectively in a team to identify, measure, and classify rocks, sediments, landforms and geological structures in the field, using traditional and modern field methods.
  • 2 Analyse and communicate field data through preparation of traditional and digital geological and geomorphological maps, and interpretative cross sections.
  • 3 Discuss and critically assess the surface and subsurface processes that form New Zealand’s landscape, based on information obtained in the field and supplemented by historic data.
  • 4 Discuss environmental, hazard, and landscape management issues at selected field sites, and how they may be impacted by natural resource use or environmental changes.
