Māori Values and Resource Management

In this applied course students will learn about Māori concepts and values associated with the management of natural resources. Students will gain an appreciation of the importance of indigenous values, and in particular Māori values and management approaches to sustainable resource management. Case studies will be undertaken to develop skills in the management of natural resources.

  • 1 Gain an introduction to Māori values relevant to resource management.
  • 2 Understand some of the fundamental Māori concepts including; whakapapa, tikanga and kaitiakitanga.
  • 3 Gain an introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi as it relates to Māori resource management.
  • 4 Gain an understanding of the impact of Māori values through legislation, specifically the RMA (1991) and Fisheries Act (1996) and others.
  • 5 Access appropriate resources to prepare essays or reports on issues associated with Māori values and resource management.
