Maara kai - Traditional and Contemporary Māori Food Production

A course that offers the opportunity for postgraduate students to learn about traditional and contemporary Māori food production including the values and science processes aligned to this activity. Particular emphasis will be placed on the concepts of land and crop management systems, kaitiakitanga and the relationship of these kaupapa Māori based systems to the present day. These systems will be discussed in context with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and present day legislation.

  • 2 Explain fundamental concepts, such as whakapapa and tikanga, as they apply to Māori food production and systems.
  • 3 Discuss the range of indigenous crops grown by Māori and the role of tikanga in food production.
  • 4 Discuss the role of Māori in the horticulture industry both historically and contemporarily.
  • 5 Access appropriate resources to prepare papers on topics associated with Māori horticulture and horticultural systems.
