Massey University’s Bachelor of Science with Honours with a major in animal science is a prestigious qualification for those that are interested in progressing to further, in-depth research. This postgraduate qualification will also give you a career advantage.
Animal science is a broad subject and you could engage in study and research in one of many subjects from livestock production, genetics, nutrition, reproductive physiology, lactation, animal behaviour and welfare.
Massey University’s proud record in land-based study dates back to 1927 when we offered New Zealand’s first degrees in agriculture.
Massey is world-ranked and New Zealand’s No 1 university in agriculture according to the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) rankings and ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
At Massey you will not just be studying animal science, you will be part of this world-leading animal and agricultural science hub. Massey’s Manawatu campus is surrounded by working farms and state-of-the-art animal science research facilities. You are able to access our extensive research and working facilities as part of your study. These include:
Massey has an active research programme in many areas of applied and theoretical aspects of animal science and much of this is funded by industry. This means as a master’s student you have the opportunity to research a relevant issue and generate solutions for the real world.
We also host The International Sheep Research Centre, which leads the world with its investigations into sheep husbandry and related areas.
Massey’s Manawatū campus hosts the only multi-function teaching laboratories in Australasia. The labs won a Best Practice Award for Innovation at the Association for Tertiary Education Management conference in Australia and were short-listed for the international UKS-Lab awards. Each laboratory can be tailored to accommodate a variety of disciplines, a unique feature in Australasia.
Massey University has a wide range of other facilities related to agriculture. Dairy, sheep and beef and deer farms are located adjacent to the Palmerston North campus. In addition, a number of research facilities are also available, including the Pasture and Crop Research Unit, the Fertiliser and Lime Research Centre, Massey AgriFood Technology Partnership, the Plant Growth Unit, the Equine hospital, the Life Cycle Management Centre, Massey University farms and Seed Tech Services, an ISTA-accredited seed testing laboratory.
Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. This qualification will push you to produce your best creative, strategic and theoretical ideas. The workload replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study.
An honours degree is a sign of your excellence and in-depth understanding of the field of animal science. Should you pursue a career after qualifying, this qualification will give you a head start on other potential employees with undergraduate degrees.
The honours programme also gives you the research and analytical skills you need to progress into further high-level research/study, such as at a PhD level.
