You will learn from highly respected academics and business experts, gaining an international perspective on the major that you choose.

Complete in a shorter time

This master’s qualification offers the same rigorous and prestigious programme as other master’s degrees, yet can be completed in only three semesters (180 credits), or one and half years.

What will you learn?

A master’s is a rigorous, challenging, rewarding and exciting programme of study. Your study will focus on your chosen major, but help you put this speciality into the context of other business disciplines - reflecting the reality of today’s business environment.

To succeed at a senior level in business, or academia, you must be able to communicate your work and findings effectively.

The Master of Business Studies programme will develop your oral and written communication skills to the level expected of senior business leaders.

You will learn the processes and disciplines involved in high-level in-depth research and how to apply them to business. As part of your study you will complete and present a comprehensive written report on an independent research topic.

Relevant learning

We utilise our relationships with industry and help you draw on experience you may have to give your learning context and relevance to the real world.

Flexibility of study

The MBS offers a flexible study plan comprising of subject specialisation courses and research-focused courses.

Why postgraduate study?

Postgraduate study is hard work but hugely rewarding and empowering. The Master of Business Studies will push you to produce your best creative, strategic and theoretical ideas. The workload replicates the high-pressure environment of senior workplace roles. Our experts are there to guide but if you have come from undergraduate study, you will find that postgraduate study demands more in-depth and independent study.

Not just more of the same

Postgraduate study is not just ‘more of the same’ undergraduate study. It takes you to a new level in knowledge and expertise especially in planning and undertaking research.

A good fit if you:

  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree (or bachelor’s degree with honours) in business or related discipline with good grades
  • Are interested in a postgraduate qualification with a research component
  • Wish to progress your business career into a more senior level, or
  • Would like to continue on to further study such as a PhD
Bronwyn Bruce-Bland
Research Analyst, Motu

“I enrolled in a master’s degree in economics because I really enjoy academia. I plan to do a PhD in the future and my thesis forms part of a portfolio of work that demonstrates my ability to research at a postgraduate level…”

I find the work at Motu interesting because it is constantly pushing me to the limits of what I know and then getting me to look two steps further. The work we do questions the fabric of our society, from gender pay gaps to wellbeing and human rights to leading environmental economic research. Skills that are currently in demand from a well-designed master’s degree in economics are applied econometrics, working with large, complex data and a critical and creative approach to both potential and existing research. Given that I chose to do a full year thesis, I was fortunate to have a fantastic supervisor who I cannot recommend highly enough.

Business studies equips students with the flexible and highly portable skills employers are looking for.
