The Bachelor of Science gives you a broad science foundation.
You will be able to take advantage of Massey’s expertise across a broad range of sciences disciplines. If you are interested in natural and fundamental sciences, you can choose to complete a double major/minor combination including chemistry, biology, genetics or physics. These are also areas where computational and data processing skills are becoming increasingly important.
Similarly, you may choose data science with a minor from any of the offerings under business, health, creative arts or humanities and social sciences.

A Ministry of Education report, undertaken over nine years, showed that those who complete a qualification in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics field of study have high relative earnings after they complete their study. Earnings can be substantially more than other graduates.

After spending a long time out of the workforce raising my kids I knew I needed to retrain. I wanted to do something that had really good prospects, that played to my strengths and that I liked. Massey offered the flexibility to study via distance and block course learning and studying from home was a great.

Once I had a taste, I knew data science was the right choice for me. I work with large transactional datasets and do a combination of regular reporting and new analysis projects. There are always little puzzles and I get the buzz of problem solving every day. Working with analysts, client-facing people and data engineers also keeps things really interesting.
When I started the role I hit the ground running with the skills I learned from my degree. A lot of people say that going into the workforce isn’t what you expect, but this wasn’t the case for me.

According to market research, it is estimated there will be a shortage of 1,200 data scientists in New Zealand by 2017. The average paying salary for a data scientist in the United States is $90,000 and over $100,000 for those with working experience.
