Honours was the most full on year of study, but it was also the most rewarding! I learnt a lot more than just statistics. I learnt to write scientifically-concise articles, conduct productive meetings, present confidently and be truly organised. With relatively small class sizes, lectures became interactive discussions where the staff would go out of their way to help with your understanding of the material.
I came to Massey with the intention of studying to become a vet. However, it soon became obvious that I was not one for getting my hands dirty in a lab (or a paddock!). What I did enjoy was the number crunching and data analysis aspects. So I ended up completing a BSc in mathematics and statistics from where I enrolled in the BSc (Hons) programme.
The best part about honours is the opportunity to be involved in a current research project. My research involved the collaboration of both statisticians and epidemiologists. With the use of Bayesian statistics we were able to calculate the uncertainty in the population attributable risk, and determine whether abattoir workers in New Zealand, exposed to the bacteria leptospira, had a significantly higher risk of developing the disease leptospirosis.
I am now a current PhD student at Massey. My research is an extension of my previous work involving parameter estimation and uncertainty, but now with a focus on experimental designs with complex sampling structures. The models we develop will allow us to adjust for imprecision in diagnostic testing and ultimately provide a means to assessing the public health impact of interventions to eliminate or reduce risk factors.
After completing my PhD I hope to continue on in the field of statistical epidemiology overseas.

Dr. Bebbington is a Professor in Geostatistics. He is internationally recognised for his expertise in the estimation of natural hazards using statistical approaches, having co-authored the standard review articles on probabilistic volcanic hazard analysis and eruption forecasting. He has also headed the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior’s Commission on Statistics in Volcanology
His major research interest is in hazard estimation, particularly from earthquakes and volcanos. Another of his areas of research expertise is the quantitative techniques used in the management, monitoring and control of production processes and services. Recent work includes applications to biostatistics and fluvial dating/climatology.
