Bachelor of Arts (Defence Studies) structure

You can begin your major by choosing from a number of 100-level courses in Defence and Security Studies. These courses look at areas like command, logistics, tactics, and the history of warfare. Not all the 100-level courses are offered each year, so select your first-year courses from the ones available in the year you want to begin your major.

Possible First Year

You may know you have an interest in Defence Studies but you are unsure about what courses might complement this interest or lead on to a second major, or minor. The following list provides possible choices for interests in Economics, Politics, Sociology or Security Studies to help with planning your first year of study. A usual full-time workload for first year is eight courses; four courses in Semester One, and four courses in Semester Two.

Requirements

The major in Defence Studies is not just for people employed in the military, it is for anyone with an interest in the various aspects of defence, for example, command, logistics, tactics, policy, or strategy.

Major Requirements

A major consists of 135 credits in Defence Studies, including 294.115 War and Society and 294.215 Global Defence Challenges.

Minor Requirements

A minor consists of 75 credits in Defence Studies, including 294.115294.215:15 credits at 300-level; 30 credits at 200 and/or 300-level, and 30 credits at any level from the Defence Studies schedule.
