Mechatronics is a multi-disciplinary field of engineering that uses mechanical, electrical, software and control engineering to develop innovative, intelligent systems.
A Massey University Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (Mechatronics) equips you with the knowledge and skills you will need in order to practically develop your own mechatronic systems. These skills will help you develop effective solutions to the problems you will face in industry.
The degree strikes a balance between a broad engineering education and practical abilities. Through intensive courses and challenging projects, you will graduate as a confident, competent, and competitive engineer.
Massey University has a number of fully-equipped workshops, whose tools, e.g. 3-D printers, laser cutters, lathes, and mills, you will learn how to use during the course of your studies.

The mechatronics major at Massey University is a practical, multi-disciplinary major that teaches you about mechanics, electronics, software, and control. It emphasises the importance of a coherent and concurrent design process when developing a system.
Over one quarter of the Bachelor of Engineering is project-based. These projects will give you the skills to design, build, and integrate mechanical, electrical, and software systems from the ground up.
You will solve a problem faced by a third-world country which could mean developing a cost-effective water filter for villagers; or creating a product for a New Zealand company such as a mobile robot or smart furniture.
Supporting the practical projects are the academic courses. In these courses, you will learn about mechanics. This could include things like building and breaking a scale bridge, analysing the mechanical properties of materials, programming or designing and building electrical circuits.
You will also learn how to use tools used in industry such as industry-standard Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools such as SolidWorks and Altium.
The BE (Hons) programme has been accredited by Engineering NZ as a professional engineering degree under the Washington Accord. This is an international agreement between bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programmes.
Signatories are from Australia, Canada, China, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and Peru. This means you can practice as an engineer in these countries using your Massey University BE (Hons) qualification.
A Ministry of Education report, undertaken over nine years, showed that those who complete a qualification in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics field of study have high relative earnings after they complete their study. Earnings can be substantially more than other graduates. Engineering and building-related fields have the largest earnings premiums over the national median of young graduates.

During my final year, I was offered multiple jobs through Massey’s great industry connections. After graduating, I started work as an Electronics Research and Development Engineer at Tru-Test Limited. My role has largely comprised of researching and developing new products to meet the ever-changing needs of farmers around the world. I do this via designing electric fence energisers by creating printed circuit boards and verifying designs using simulations. My work brings me great satisfaction as I know that somewhere around the world, a customer is opening a product that I have worked on and it is going to make a positive difference to their daily life.
As I progress through my career, I want to shift my focus towards automated systems. As the industry progresses towards the inclusion of artificial intelligence and automated robots, I want to make sure I am right there in the middle of it, leading the way for the future. With the exposure and opportunities provided by Massey University, I know it’s all possible."
