As a food technologist you will learn how to contribute to economic growth through improvements in productivity and Research and Development (R&D). You will play a key role in the development of new products and processes for the food industry.
Developing and improving food products, nutrition, health and safety are a priority for food technologists. You will learn how to produce products that consumers desire. That might be products with new beneficial characteristics, or that taste amazing, or that have longer shelf life but contain fewer additives, or all three!
By studying the Bachelor of Food Technology with Honours (Food Product Technology) at Massey you will learn how to contribute towards the global trend and desire for healthier food. Some examples that have been worked on by Massey students include: a sports drink to improve performance, a high-protein cereal, an extruded snack high in protein but low in fat, or a low-calorie dessert or chocolate product.
A 2017 Ministry of Education publication The post-study earnings and destinations of young domestic graduates showed that those who complete a qualification in a science, agriculture, technology, computer science, engineering or mathematics field of study have high relative earnings after they complete their study compared to the national median. Earnings can be substantially more than other graduates.

I love creating and trying new foods and am particularly interested in the food regulation and safety aspects of the industry. With my degree, I have learnt the significant role food plays in public health. I felt a need to consider food safety more seriously, as a contaminated food product can cause severe illness. For these reasons, I aimed to one day work for the Ministry for Primary Industries.
I have recently accomplished my goal and started my new job as an Imported Foods Advisor at the Ministry for Primary Industries. As an advisor, I deal with imported food application in food safety aspects and give clearance/permits to them. I also go out and do sampling for microbiological tests.
I found this degree both challenging and fascinating. All my lecturers and colleagues were very supportive and helpful, always willing to go the extra mile for me. As I got closer to the end of my degree, I found that everything I had learnt throughout the four years was very practical and applicable in the food industry. And I am proud to say, that after all my hard work, I’ve got a job that I wanted to do.
