Learn about student exchange at Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences

Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences - Hochschule München, Germany

Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences (HM) was founded in 1971. With more than 18,000 students, it is the largest university of its kind in Bavaria and one of the largest in Germany. The university offers a number of classes in English, but Massey students with German language ability will be able to select from any of the courses offered. Courses at HM have a strong focus on application-oriented instruction.

Munich, Germany’s third-largest city with over 1 million people, lies on the elevated plains of Upper Bavaria.  It is about 50 km north of the northern edge of the Alps, one of the great mountain range systems of Europe. Café culture is strong in Munich, especially during the summer. There are many restaurants accommodating all preferences of cuisine, and possibly the most important free time activity during the summer: the beer gardens.

Munich is an historic city with a range of cultural attractions.  It is also a leading economic centre, and many major companies, including Siemens and BMW, have their global headquarters in Munich.

Exchange students at HM can choose to have a German student buddy, who will help show new students around the campus and the city and settle into life at HM. They can also participate in the events the International Club organizes for exchange students during the semester.

Exchange Student Travel Grant

New Zealand citizens and permanent residents who apply to go on exchange to HM are automatically considered for a Massey University Exchange Student Travel Grant.  No additional paperwork needs to be submitted.

Courses

There are a selection of courses taught in English each semester (see the link below) in subject areas including Technology, Engineering, Business, Tourism Management, Social Sciences and General Studies.

HM also offers small group projects facilitated in English for third-year students in Industrial Design, Photographic Design, and Communication Design. These projects change each semester. Email the International Mobility team for more information.

German language lessons

HM offers free preparatory German language courses for exchange students prior to every winter semester. The classes are for 20 hours per week over two weeks, starting in early September. Students can earn 3 ECTS for successfully completing the course. Places are limited and assigned on a first come/first serve basis. During the semester, exchange students can also take German language classes on many levels, from beginner to advanced.

Academic calendar

Hochschule München University of Applied Sciences works on a semester basis with two semesters in each academic year.

WS = Winter Semester (early October to mid-January, with exams ending mid-February) - correlates to Massey Semester Two
SS = Summer Semester (mid-March to early July, with exams ending late July) - correlates to Massey Semester One

Exchange students are expected to arrive early in order to be able to participate in the Orientation Days (Mid September for the WS, early March for the SS).
