Reproductive tract diseases cause production loss in dairy cows. These diseases are multifactorial. Mr De Boer focused on diagnostic methods as well as reproductive tract infection and inflammation. He evaluated the current available diagnostic tests for these diseases and the quality of published papers on these tests. In addition, he found some novel associations between intrauterine bacteria, reproductive tract inflammation, and reproductive performance. Mr De Boer was the first in New Zealand to investigate sensitivity for a range of antibiotics against bacteria from bovine uterine origin. Furthermore, he detected a bovine herpesvirus previously unknown to New Zealand.
