Smart Electrochemical Sensing System for the Real Time Detection of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds and Hormones

A regular ingestion of synthetic teratogenic compounds that have leached out from plastic food packaging is the major source of genetic, epigenetic and developmental defects leading to cancer, diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular diseases in human beings. Mr Asif developed a smart electrochemical sensing system that could be used as a prognostic tool to quantify concentration level of endocrine toxins that have leached into plastic-packaged drinking water, juices and beverages up to parts per billion. He immobilized the molecular imprinted polymer coating, also known as "artificial antibodies", on the sensing surface of an electromagnetically driven microelectromechanical interdigital transducer to achieve selectivity for the targeted toxin molecules in the fluid medium. Contrary to the current methods available for detection of endocrine toxins and hormones, the developed real-time technique displayed the potential to emerge as a rapid chemical analysing procedure that was non-invasive, low-cost, robust, and did not require hi-tech equipment and professional expertise for real world applications.
