Ms Giles investigated students’ perceptions of their workload and how this relates to approaches to learning, using a regional polytechnic as a case study. The aim was to contribute to improvements in the quality of learning, and provide guidelines for other institutions concerned with this issue. The complex interrelationships that emerged from the study suggested the need for a coordinated effort from all sectors within the institution to ensure students experience a manageable workload and the quality of their learning experience is enhanced.
