Dr Savitri’s research focused on developing a method to identify areas susceptible to erosion in plantation forests. Her case study area was located in Central Java, Indonesia. Digital image processing of seven imagery and aerial photographs was used in combination with geographical information systems to acquire land cover data. An erosion prediction model combined rainfall, slope, geology and land cover data, while erosion risk was predicted using land cover, soil type and soil depth. The erosion prediction model was able to identify erosion hotspots with a high degree of precision. Dr Savitri’s research will be of practical value to forestry managers and planners as well as to natural resource managers in the public sector who have a responsibility to ensure that resources are used in a sustainable manner.
