Use of Journal Articles in Stream and Printed Study Guides
Citing Copyrighted Material
You must include a complete reference (citation) for any copyrighted material that you use in Stream or printed study guides.
If the material was taken from an article database, the reference should include this information as well.
Please also include the wording, "Provided by Massey University Library."
Linking to Online Journal Articles from Stream
For teaching purposes, you can add direct links to online journal articles to Stream.
For assistance with creating these links in Stream, email the Library.
Include the references for the articles to which you would like to link. The Library will send you the URLs within two working days of the receipt of the request.
Uploading PDFs into Stream
Instead of uploading PDFs into Stream, the Library recommends linking to journal articles from Stream for several reasons:
- Many publishers' licences forbid static copies of their articles to be accessed via learning management systems (e.g. Stream).
Linking to articles ensures that we comply with all licence parameters, as all online journal publishers (except Harvard Business Review) permit linking.
- Linking to articles allows the Library to track accurate usage statistics so that we know which journals to renew, and which journals might be candidates for cancellation.
- Linking to articles presents students with similar scholarly resources, such as linked article reference lists and other related documents.
For assistance with creating links to journal articles in Stream, email the Library.
Please include in your email references for the articles to which you would like to link. The Library will send you the URLs within two working days of the receipt of the request.
Use of Journal Articles in Printed Study Guides
If you are planning to include copies of journal articles in your printed study guide, you must comply with copyright provisions. Therefore, it is important to observe the following guidelines:
If any of the Massey campus libraries holds the article in print, you should copy the article from the print version of the journal rather than from the online version.
To see whether or not the Library holds the print version, search for the journal by title in Discover. Print holdings are listed in the journal's record:
Note:If the print journal is held by another Massey campus library, please place an Inter-Campus request for your article
Articles that are only online may be able to be printed and photocopied for inclusion in study guides. However, some publishers forbid this practice. Contact the Library with your article references, and be sure to let us know you wish to include the articles in a printed study guide.
If you have any further questions please contact us.
