Accommodation office contactsMataī, Miro, Tawa and Tōtara halls are collectively called the Tree Halls. Our Tree Halls are centrally located in a park-like setting within Massey’s Manawatū campus, close to student facilities and the bus stop.
Overview
- Spacious, fully furnished single rooms in a modern living environment for 200 students (50 per hall), aged 17 to 23 years.
- Shared gender-neutral bathrooms in each wing, large common room with TV and kitchen.
- Catered meal plan, offering two meals per day (lunch and dinner during the week and brunch and dinner during weekends).
- Access to external large shared common space for socialising, laundry, bathroom and study room.
- Internet/wifi in all rooms and common areas.
- Massey gym membership.
- Close to all student facilities including lecture theatres, the library, dining hall, and the Colombo Road public bus stop.
- Based within a community of four halls, forming a supportive student environment in attractive surroundings.
Rooms and furniture
All bedrooms in Mataī, Miro, Tawa and Tōtara halls are fully furnished, large single private rooms. Each has a window that can be opened, and a secure lockable door.
Each room includes:
- king single bed and mattress
- drawers
- wardrobe
- desk, chair and desk lamp
- shelf, mirror and rubbish bin
- carpet and curtains
- heater.
Items you should bring
Along with clothing and personal items, you should also bring:
- bedding and towels (or you can purchase a bedding pack when you accept your offer of place)
- toiletries and toiletry bag
- coat hangers
- laundry basket
- laundry detergent
- cleaning products
- 3M hooks/tape or white tac, if you wish to hang anything on your wall (no tape, nails, screws or blu tac allowed).
You may also choose to bring a small fridge, no larger than 45L, which must be put on a waterproof mat.
Bathrooms
The halls have shared gender-neutral bathrooms with showers, toilets and sinks. There is one bathroom for every four students. All toilets and showers are within self-contained private cubicles with lockable doors.
Catering
Residents living in Mataī, Miro, Tawa and Tōtara halls are on a catered meal plan, which offers you two meals daily – lunch and dinner Monday to Friday, and brunch and dinner on weekends.
The dining hall is situated at the Student Centre on Concourse. It offers a diverse range of food choices that change daily. You use your student ID card to receive meals.
Our Time2Eat App provides access to view the menu. You can also allow a friend to collect your meal if you are sick, order a takeaway meal and give feedback.
Communal spaces and shared facilities
The halls have a common lounge with TV, sofas and a fully equipped kitchen. The Tree Halls share two external communal spaces, named Karaka and Kānuka, which have a social space, study space and a laundry with washers, dryers and an ironing board. Cost for laundry is $3 per wash and $3 per dry.
There is also plenty of communal outdoor space, including a volleyball court.
Alcohol
Drinking in moderation is permitted between 7pm to 10pm, Thursday to Saturday in the Kānuka and Karaka Commons,. Drinking in bedrooms is not permitted.
Certain types of alcohol are not permitted, such as spirits and hard liquors, or alcohol in large quantities such as beer kegs.

You can prepay by semester or full year. Domestic students are also able to pay by direct debit on a weekly basis.
Payment options
Deposit
After you have applied for accommodation and your application has been successful, you will need to pay a deposit by the offer expiry date stated in your letter of offer to secure your place.
The deposit is $762 for a full year or $722 for one semester.

To secure a refund of fees (the processing fee is non-refundable) cancellations must be received by:
- 1 December 2023 for returning halls residents
- 22 January 2024 for new hall residents.
The processing fee is non-refundable.
2024 occupancy dates
Your accommodation contract term must reflect your study programme – if your programme of study is full year you must apply for full year accommodation.
