Part-time work for students

Part-time work is a great way to build new skills, make new contacts and identify your likes and dislikes. When choosing part-time work, think about the skills you will gain and how they will enhance your career.

Make sure you will be able to meet both your work and study commitments before you start. It's important that you don't compromise your academic performance.

Before accepting part-time work, ask yourself:

  • Does the position include flexible work hours during exams and holidays?
  • Do I need to complete an internship or work experience as part of my qualification?
  • Will the income from this work affect my student allowance?

Finding part-time work

Massey CareerHub and Student Job Search are great sites to visit when you're looking for part-time work.

We recommend you work no more than 15 hours per week during the semester. If you're an international student, visit the Immigration New Zealand website to find out about work rules for international students.
