Global Citizen provides Massey students with opportunities to have international experiences across a range of academic areas. Here are some recent programmes that were available to Massey students.
Tecnológico de Monterrey offered students the opportunity to live and study for four weeks in July on different campuses across Mexico. iSummerMx offered ten subject areas including Aeronautic, Culture, Marketing, Business, Architecture, Music, Engineering, Jewellery, Migration, and Economics.
Each program included two courses, accommodation (hotel and campus residence), breakfast (6 days per week), transportation for all activities during the program and between cities, tickets for all the programme’s events, and a Student Kit. The cost was USD 1,600.
Anhui University offered two scholarships for Massey students to attend their 2 – 10 July 2020 International Summer School. The scholarships covered accommodation, food, local transportation, field trips, and lectures. Lectures on Chinese and Hui culture were in English. Participants explored cultural areas around the region and interacted with Anhui University students and local families.
Wuhan University provided two scholarships for Massey University students from any qualification to attend their 2020 Luojia International Summer Program. The scholarships covered the registration fee, tuition fee, and housing expense for participant. Participants needed to meet any additional costs at their own personal expense. The program has been providing international students with a better understanding of Wuhan University and China since 2006 under the theme of Understanding China: Past & Present.
The New Zealand Space Agency invited high-performing New Zealand post-graduate students to apply to participate in the NASA International Internship programme from August to December 2020. To complement this opportunity, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Space Agency offered the New Zealand Space Scholarship.
The JET Programme is a fully-paid overseas employment opportunity from the government of Japan that allows Kiwis to live and work in Japan for a year or more. Participants work either as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs), or Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs). No teaching experience, Japanese language ability, or overseas experience is required to apply to the Programme, and there is no age restriction.
The JET Programme’s goal is cross-cultural exchange at a grassroots level, and as such, encourages New Zealanders from all walks of life and backgrounds to apply. Applicants must be a New Zealand Citizen and currently hold a Bachelor’s Degree/Teaching Diploma.
This two-week programme in China brings international students together in Beijing and Xi’an. Students will acquaint themselves with China’s history, culture, economics, legal structure and society through a blend of practical teaching sessions, field trips, and cultural immersion activities.
The programme, offered by the National University of Singapore Research Institute, was conducted in English for undergraduate and graduate students 8 - 22 December 2019.
Tecnológico de Monterrey offers students the opportunity to live and study for four weeks on different campuses across Mexico. This gives you the chance to learn about different parts of the country without interrupting your Massey studies. Subject areas include Aeronautics, Global Business, Culture and Identity, and Insights to Love Mexico.

The Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (LACAPE) offered a funded short term programme at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil from 7-15 December 2019.
The programme saw participants take six block courses and visit four Brazilian companies. There was a case study competition where each team presented their idea to a panel of professors and company managers from the relevant industry. Students were split into teams of 4 (2xNZ and 2xBrazil). The winning two teams received flights for their Brazilian teammates to come to NZ in 2020, where the top two teams participated in a business accelerator programme to work on their idea. The Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence offered a paid internship working with the Chilean APEC Business Advisory Council team from 1 July to 1 December 2019. The intern gained global business experience in a Latin American context while supporting the implementation and delivery of the APEC Forum in Santiago, Chile in November 2019. Applicants must be an NZ citizen or permanent resident, be a final-year undergraduate, recent graduate, or Master’s student, and have a minimum B+ GPA.
The NASA International Internship is an opportunity for New Zealand tertiary students to work collaboratively on research with a NASA mentor. The programme took place at NASA’s Ames Research Centre in Silicon Valley, California from June to August 2019 and was designed to enhance international and intercultural understanding and skills by working on NASA research or NASA related mission or project. Opportunities for collaboration with a diverse range of other interns were be provided both in formal and informal settings.
This scholarship provided a fully-funded internship in Medellín, Colombia in a workplace that aligned with the areas of art, film, television, media production, communications, radio, newspapers, museums, and more. This 12-week internship provided a better understanding of work roles to explore in the future in the cultural industries, practice speaking Spanish every day, and bringing a fresh perspective back to New Zealand about the importance and value of Latin American culture.
The Asia New Zealand Foundation invited final year undergraduate/postgraduate students, and recent graduates in public relations, communications, business, marketing and/or media studies to apply for an internship in India with Genesis Burson-Marsteller (GBM), over the 2018/2019 summer. GBM is a corporate communications firm with a range of high-profile global and Indian clients across a diverse range of sectors, including New Zealand clients seeking to raise their profile in the important Indian market.
Five fully-funded scholarships were available to take part in a CRCC Asia 2019 Inclusion Initiative Scholarship.
CRCC Asia is committed to inclusion for all. They will accept applications and motivation statements from any student that has a genuine need, even from individuals who meet the eligibility requirements and are not represented in the groups above.
The Massey University Global Citizen programme and CRCC Asia offered an eight week Japanese Studies Cultural Experience internship that began in December 2019. Students were placed in internships relevant to their field of study, but a focus on Business, marketing, or NGOs/charities were preferred. The programme ran from 12 December 2019 to 8 February 2020.
The programme began with a week-long period of business and cultural activities, followed by a seven-week internship placement. Students were allocated to their internship placement based on an interview process with CRCC Asia. Throughout the internship the participants were supported by an English speaking supervisor. While a good grasp of Japanese language is not a pre-requisite for this programme, it is preferred.
The value of the scholarship was over $11,800 per student and included a contribution towards travel and living expenses. Students were required to contribute financially to participate, estimated at $1,000 for the internship programme cost plus other minor expenses. The eligibility requirements included:
The objective was to provide students from Massey University and Auckland University of Technology with the opportunity to spend time exploring the Design industry in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. Students from each university had the opportunity to attend this five-week programme, running 2 November - 7 December 2019. Eligibility requirements included:
The Design Internship Programme had an approximate programme cost of $5,900. Students were expected to meet their own programme, travel and meal costs during the internship programme. The Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia funding could be applied for to support participation in this programme.
This study tour to India in January and February 2019 offered ten students an opportunity to develop professional competence through liaising and working alongside artisans, business and design practitioners in the Indian fashion and textile industry. Funding support was provided through the Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia.
Students took up internship positions at Jaipur Rugs, an international award-winning knotted rug company, and at Bhu:sattva, a leading eco-fashion company. They learned global approaches to design business within a sustainable practice framework.
Massey University College of Creative Arts teamed up with Next Step Connections to create an amazing opportunity for Visual Communication Design students to participate in a 12-week internship. The internship sees students partner with a Hong Kong-based design company during Semester 1 2020. Students needed to meet the following eligibility requirements at the time of the internship:
Students are expected to complete academic projects during the internship, as well as social media commitments. For this, students will earn 60 Massey credits towards their Bachelor of Design (VCD) programme. Successful applicants would ideally complete Semester 2 of Year 3 and all of Year 4 in the School of Design upon completion of the internship.
Students are expected to meet their own programme, travel and meal costs during the internship programme. The Prime Minister’s Scholarship for Asia funding can be applied for to support participation in this programme.
The Southeast Asia CAPE’s Tertiary Market Immersion Programme (TMIP) will be in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore for three weeks from Mid-January to early February 2020. The programme is fully funded by the SEA CAPE. There were 16 places on the programme for business-savvy undergraduate students of any discipline who will be in their second year or above in 2020. This programme could send up to fifteen Massey University students to study Mandarin and participate in a series of hands-on business activities for six weeks at Peking University, China. It aimed to deepen understanding and the cultural, linguistic, and economic ties between New Zealand and China through offering New Zealand students first-hand language, cultural, and business experiences.
This programme invited international students to join local students in a study tour around Malaysia. It promoted awareness about sustainable ecology and multiple unique cultures around the world within its Building Bridges for International Understanding and Friendship theme. Students could attend either Indigenous Communities of Malaysia or Sustainability of Tropical Heritage in June or July.
15 May 2019 was the application deadline for both courses. Each course costed US $2,200, which included accommodation, meals, course materials, field trips and transportation during the programme.
Huawei New Zealand sponsoried 20 Information Communication Technology undergraduates from leading universities across the NZ to participate in an all-expenses-paid trip to China from 1 - 12 July 2019 featuring cultural, technical and business training. Students spent an initial period in Beijing where they received Mandarin training from one of the best universities in Beijing and learned about Chinese culture. They also participated in group tours of cultural sites such as the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall of China and the 2008 Olympic Park.
The group then flew to Huawei Head Quarter in Shenzhen, where they learned about Huawei’s international business culture and values and spent time learning about Huawei’s products and solutions. At Huawei HQ students also received technical training from some of the finest professionals in the industry. All travel expenses (including the return air tickets, meal and accommodation in China, visa application and transportation within China, plus travel insurance etc.) were covered by Huawei.
Students must hold a NZ passport, be studying ICT or a related major, and have a B+ GPA across all their undergraduate courses.
UCAM offered a wide range of specialization courses over two or three weeks in July. All courses were taught in English. Subjects included:
The university's Global Opportunities programs provided unique experiences for students to learn about Chile’s economy and its role in the Latin American and Asia-Pacific Region. Options focusing on the APEC Summit that will be hosted by Chile, learning Spanish, and Chilean culture were available in July 2019. The programmes range from two to four weeks in length.
PIOPIO is an experience company that develops new retail and hospitality concepts, using local culture and arts as the main anchor to help connect visitors to their surroundings. The objective of the programme is provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of their chosen industry, and to do so within the context of a sustainable island community. Throughout the five-week programme, while you spend time exploring the realities of your desired profession and building contacts with industry professionals, you will also be immersed in new cultures, experience new ways of approaching and overcoming challenges and contribute to the future of sustainable living.

This annual programme allows young leaders from around the Asia-Pacific region to experience the APEC CEO summit, to meet international leaders and to network with other delegates from across the Asia-Pacific. The Massey Office of Global Engagement and Global Citizen programme provides a scholarship to attend this Forum each year. The 2019 forum took place in Santiago, Chile.

Applicants needed to submit a CV and short (ie 1 page) letter outlining their suitability for participation as the Massey University representative at APEC Voices. All applicants must have the support of their respective Head of School / Institute.
