Self-service password reset

Self-service password reset is a feature available to Massey staff and enrolled students. It allows you to reset your network account password on your own, anytime, from any device, without needing to contact support.

You can use Self-Service Password Reset when you are having issues logging into your Single Sign-On account because:

  • You forgot your password
  • Your password is not working and you want to reset it
  • Your account is locked out after multiple failed sign-in attempts and you want to unlock it

How to register

Self-Service Password Reset is an opt-in feature. You need to register to be able to use it.

  1. On your web browser, go to the Massey Self-Service Password Reset setup page:
  2. Log in using your Massey user ID in the format:
    • Staff:, e.g.
    • Student:, e.g.
  3. You will be presented with the authentication methods available for you to setup. You need to register at least one (1) of the authentication method.
    • Authentication Phone: Set this option to another phone number that you have access to. An example is a mobile phone that can receive a text or a call.
      To work properly, phone numbers must be in the format +CountryCode PhoneNumber, for example, +64 224255512. There needs to be a space between the country code and the phone number. Password reset does not support phone extensions.
    • Authentication Email: Set this option to an alternate email address that you can access without using the password you want to reset. We recommend using a non-Massey email account. For example:
    • Security Questions: Select from a list of questions to answer. You can't use the same question or answer more than once.
    • Mobile app – Download the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app to receive a verification code for authentication. The mobile app is available for AndroidiOS, and Windows Phone.
  4. Provide the information required for one or more authentication method. We suggest that you register multiple methods. This gives you flexibility when one of the methods isn't available. An example is when you're traveling and you're unable to access your phone.

  5. Select finish. You can now use SSPR when you need to in the future.

How to reset password

If you have registered for Self-Service Password Reset, follow these steps:

  1. On your web browser, go to the Massey password reset page or click Can’t access my account? from the login page.
  2. Log in using your Massey user ID in the following format:
    Staff: e.g.
    Student: e.g.

    Enter the characters in the picture or the words in the audio.
    Click Next to continue.
  3. Select your preferred authentication method and enter any details requested, i.e. mobile number or answers to security questions. You will be prompted to receive a verification code through a text, a call, or an email to your alternate address. These options will use your previously registered details.
    If the Email my alternate email or Text my mobile phone or Call my mobile phone or Enter a code from my authenticator app is selected, then enter the verification code provided.
    If Answer my security questions is selected, then three (3) random questions will be displayed and you must submit the correct answers to all questions.
    Email, text messages, and phone calls should arrive in under a minute. If you don't receive a notification in this time frame, please check your junk folder or check that the number or email being contacted is the one you expect.
    • Password needs to be at least eight (8) characters long.
    • It must contain characters from at least three (3) of the following four (4) categories: 
      • English uppercase characters (A - Z)
      • English lowercase characters (a - z)
      • Numbers (0 - 9)
      • Symbols @ # $ % ^ & * - _ ! + = [ ] { } | \ : ‘ , . ? / ` ~ " ( ) ;
    • It cannot use any of your names in your password. For example: a person named Joe Bloggs cannot use Joe or Bloggs.
    • It cannot contain three or more consecutive characters from your user account name. For example: the username "jbloggs" cannot have "jbl", "blo", "log", or "ggs" in the password.
    • It cannot be a previous password.Enter a new password, which must meet the requirements:
    Click Finish to continue.

Tools and applications

Your password will now be updated and will be immediately effective. The new password can now be used to sign into the Massey network and a number of University systems and applications that use Single Sign-On, such as:

  • Student Portal and Client / SITS
  • Stream / Moodle
  • MediaSite
  • Springshare
  • Sierra
  • EZProxy
  • Office 365, including Outlook and Skype for Business
